The NSB Sk 1 is a light gasoline - or diesel - track tractor , which from 1936 on the routes of Norges Statsbaner ( German  Norwegian State Railways ) in Norway was used. The locomotives were used for smaller transport tasks and for shunting on connecting railways and in train stations. Most of the vehicles were built as gasoline locomotives and later converted to diesel operation.

history

In the 1920s, the Norwegian machine works Hamar Jernstøberi (Ham-Jern) and Thunes mekaniske Verksted began to produce machines and locomotives under the name Norsk Maskin Industri . This cooperation led to the development and production of the series Sk 1 gasoline locomotive , which was built in the same period as the last two steam locomotive series NSB Type 49 and NSB Type 30 built for the Norwegian State Railways . Only a few examples were equipped with a diesel engine immediately upon production. Regardless of the type of engine, the vehicles were numbered consecutively.

The locomotives had a fuel tank with a capacity of 100 liters, they had a mechanical 4-speed gearbox and a rear axle driven by transmission .

Numbers 16 and 42 were originally built as diesel-powered locomotives. Power was transmitted via external coupling rods between the front and rear axles.

Manufacturer

Strømmens Værksted

The track tractors 11 to 16 were built by Strømmens Værksted in 1936 for use in Oslo , Trondheim and Narvik . All six locomotives had a top speed of 50 km / h. Numbers 11 to 15 were supplied with a gasoline engine, number 16 with a diesel engine. Presumably one locomotive came to Narvik, three to Oslo and two to Trondheim. These locomotives had a different appearance than numbers 48 to 57 built in 1939.

Norsk Maskin Industri

Numbers 23 to 44 were manufactured by Norsk Maskin Industri , with no. 42 already fitted with a diesel engine at the factory.

There are also various contradicting information about the manufacturers. According to one of these sources, Skabo jernbanevognfabrik is said to have built locomotives of this type.

Skb 201

A renumbering of all vehicle series of the Norwegian State Railways took place in 1936. The vehicles, which were only designated as Sk 1 (= ski tractor ) during the entire construction period , were given the new designation Skb 201 (= ski tractor bensinmotor ) until around 1942 . Only the series designation Skb , but not the series number ( 201 ), was written on the vehicle.

Skd 206

There are conflicting sources about the history of the renovation. Skd 206 42 is said to have been equipped with a petrol engine and redrawn as Skb 201 . With the conversion of all locomotives, a Skd 206 should have emerged from it again .

After twenty years of intensive use, considerations were made to completely overhaul the small locomotives. At that time, petrol engines no longer played a role at NSB. The reconstruction in 1960 consisted primarily of replacing the gasoline engine with a diesel engine and replacing the electrical system. The new engine was a Scania-Vabis D7 diesel engine, with six cylinders at 104 hp and direct injection.

After the conversion, all locomotives were added to the Skd 206 series (=  ski lift tractor diesel engine ). There were different versions of the lettering on the locomotives after the conversion.

Coloring

At first the vehicles were painted red like goods wagons, wheels, frames and bars were black. From 1962, locomotives for train transport were no longer to be painted in olive green, but in red with yellow stripes. That is why the track tractors were painted olive green in the same year. From 1971 on they were painted red again, so that green and red vehicles existed. Some vehicles received the NSB redesign with yellow bodies and red cabs.

commitment

The rail tractors were used at smaller train stations across Norway until they were replaced by newer, more powerful shunting locomotives in the 1980s.

After they were delivered, they were distributed among the districts as follows:

After several lines in the Stavanger district had been re-tracked in May 1944, standard-gauge shunting locomotives were required there. For example, Skb 201 39 coming from Åndalsnes in July and Skb 201 48 coming from Oslo a year later , moved to the region.

In Narvik , Skd 206 50 was used from around 1970 , which was equipped with a diesel engine built by Skabo in 1939. The locomotive has a mechanical brake.

In 1977 the Narvik district wanted to replace the Skd 206 because it was unsuitable for the marshalling yard in Narvik due to the increasing train weights, mainly because of the braking system. In addition, there was the large gap between Narvik train station and the port and the workshop area. First a Di 2 was used, followed later by the Skd 220 series , which could be operated by the station's own staff.

Whereabouts

The petrol-powered rail tractor Skb 201 43 was taken out of service just one year after its commissioning in 1939. Many of the rail tractors were sold by NSB to local industrial companies after they were taken out of service, where they continued to be used as shunting locomotives for a few years. Most of them have been scrapped, some have been preserved and are now privately owned or owned by railroad associations.

Received vehicles

  • Skd 206 31 is in very poor condition. Some parts were dismantled and for the restoration of Skd 206 35 used
  • Skd 206 35 , restored in the Norsk Jernbaneklubb
  • Skd 206 40 , as a shunting locomotive owned by a regional group of the Norsk Jernbaneklubb in Trondelag
  • Skd 206 41 , owned by the Norsk Jernbane Museum
  • Skd 206 39 and Skd 206 44 , used on the Setesdalsbane museum route
  • Furthermore, the numbers 12, 39, 30, 42, 45 and 48 have been preserved and are in different states with different owners.

Special

A green Skd 206 shunting tractor was the focus of the 1978 Norwegian feature film Olsenbanden og Dynamitt-Harry på sporet from the film series on the Olsenbande . With a "borrowed" Skd 206, the gang stole a safe wagon equipped with gold bars in order to bring it to the port of Oslo or Lysaker on the tracks of the Norwegian State Railways in Oslo .
