The Norwegian steam locomotive series NSB Type 18 was built between 1900 and 1919 by the Sächsische Maschinenfabrik Hartmann and the Hamar Jernstøberi ( German  iron foundry Hamar ) for the Norges Statsbaner (NSB), the state railway company in Norway.

history

The Norwegian railway lines, which belonged to the state, were administratively independent units at the time . The design was originally intended for the Nordbane , but was later used on many other routes in Norway. A total of 35 locomotives of different types 18a , 18b and 18c were built. The 18a 131 to 138 were built by Hartmann in Germany , the rest of the locomotives by Hamar Jernstøberi .

NSB type 18a

The wet steam - composite locomotives of the type 18a were on the north tracks ( Røykenvikbanen ( Jaren - Røykenvik ) Gjøvikbanen ( Grefsen - Gjøvik ) and Skreiabanen ( Reinsvoll - Skreia used)). The eight locomotives with the road numbers 131-134 came from Hartmann in Chemnitz in 1900 , no. 135-138 followed in 1901 and the numbers 157 and 158 were delivered by Hamar Jernstøberi in 1903. Eight of the ten locomotives, with the exception of no. 135 and 157, were later in the superheated steam type 18c was rebuilt, in which the composite technology was shut down.

NSB type 18b

The series of the Type 18b , also a wet steam compound locomotive, came from Hamar Jernstøberi in 1907 . The six locomotives were intended for use in the region around Gjøvik and for the Bergensbane . They had the company numbers 184 to 189. The machines were located in Bergen , Hamar , Trondheim , Kristiansand and Arendal . They were also used on the Eidsvoll - Otta and Otta - Dombås sections of the Dovre Railway . No. 184 was converted into Type 18c in 1938 and No. 186 in 1948 . As the last locomotives of the former Type 18b , these two were retired in 1962.

NSB type 18c

The substructure type 18c was slightly heavier than the previous types and had an enlarged cylinder diameter. In the 19 machines of this type, originally built using superheated steam technology, no composite technology was used. They were also built by Hamar Jernstøberi . In their areas of operation, they were later replaced by more powerful locomotives in line service and migrated to subordinate services. From 1964 until it was retired in 1968, No. 134 was the oldest locomotive in operation at NSB.

Whereabouts

The last NSB locomotive, 18c 255 (built in 1913 by Hamar Jernstøberi ) was taken out of service on August 25, 1969. It was originally used on the Eidsvoll – Ottabane and later came to the regions around Drammen , Oslo and Trondheim. Most recently she drove on the Namsosbane from Grong to Namsos . The locomotive was preserved as a technical monument in the Technical Museum in Bergen and was restored by the Norsk Jernbaneklubb from 1980 to 1992 . Since then, it has been in use every summer at the Gamle Vossebanen museum railway .
