Nacktarsch is a large area of just 320 hectares in the Bernkastel area of the German Moselle wine region . Its six individual layers consist of 95% slopes in a very good south-facing position. All are in the area of the municipality of Kröv and its district of Kövenig near Traben-Trarbach on the Moselle . The plural form naked asses denotes single bottles of wines from this location.

Origin of name

The name is probably a corruption of the Latin "Nectarius" or the Celtic "Nackas". Both mean something like "rocky height" and are derived from the fact that the naked ass slope looks simply "naked" in autumn without leaves.

A folk etymological tradition tells of a Kröver cellar master who is said to have spanked two boys on the bare buttocks after he caught them drinking wine from one of his barrels. Various images of this version of the history of origin can be found today on the labels of numerous Kröver nude butt bottles, but should be seen as a play on words . Other explanations lead the name of the vineyard back to Götz von Berlichingen, who is known for coarse words, or to an alleged resemblance of the mountain near Kröv to the unclothed part of the body that gave it its name. At the point that was first called “naked ass”, the wine freezes to death in some years and the leaves are stripped naked. Thus, the term "Kröver Nacktarsch" refers to the limit for wine cultivation , thus to the long maturation period in the Moselle climate and finally to the special taste of good Moselle wines.

Nationwide media coverage sparked the idea of giving the Kröver multi-purpose hall the name "Naked Ass Hall". The agreement finally took place on the name "Weinbrunnenhalle Kröver Nacktarsch".

reception

Even if there are different interpretations of the origin of the name: The name is effective in advertising, promotes sales and is known beyond Germany's borders.

In the 1980s, the naked ass gained the dubious reputation of being a cheap and, in line with popular taste, sweeter bulk wine. Since the beginning of the 2000s, there have been strong efforts to overcome this negative image.
