In 1059 the name Kövenig appears for the first time in the large letter of donation from the Polish queen Richenza , who came from the Palatinate count's house of the Ezzonen and who chose Klotten Castle as her widow's residence. Kövenig was given to the Brauweiler monastery and was obliged to deliver Moselle fish and the tithe of the wine.
After the Palatinate's house died out, Kövenig, like the entire Kröver empire , returned to the empire as a royal allod .
At first Kövenig was a settlement of Moselle fishermen. After the French took over the left bank of the Rhine in 1794, Kröv and Kövenig came to the Saar Department and in 1815 to the Kingdom of Prussia .
