Geographical location
Mont Royal is located on the river bend of the Moselle north of the town of Traben-Trarbach or between Kröv and Kövenig , which runs in a south-west-north-east direction and flows around the mountain in a horseshoe shape.
To the north, the ridge of the river loop crosses, among other things, over the Kondelwald into the Vorder Eifel ; to the south-east, the Hunsrück joins directly across the Moselle .
Mountain description
On the mountain Mont Royal are the ruins of the fortress Mont Royal , which was built between 1687 and 1698. To the north of the facility is the Montroyal holiday village and to the north-northeast in the valley of the Kövenig River .
On the southern part of the mountain and thus south of the fortress is the Traben-Trarbach / Mont Royal airfield ( ICAO code EDRM), which has a 750 m long grass runway in north-south orientation in the west. It is approved for gliders and light aircraft . To the south of the airfield is an industrial park in the city of Traben-Trarbach . Until 2012, the Department of Defense Geophysics was located southeast of the airfield in the Mont Royal barracks . That building was sold to a server operator in June 2013 by the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks . In June 2019, all servers were seized by law enforcement agencies.
Since the beginning of 2007 there has been a forest ropes course between the holiday village and the airfield with an educational adventure program and well over a hundred, sometimes challenging climbing elements. Within a very short time, the park has given the area a significant tourist boost and is visited by many associations, school classes and other groups. Nearby, on the site of a former flak position from the Second World War, there is a barbecue hut with several fireplaces.
The Kröv - Traben-Trarbach - Enkirch section of the federal highway 53 leads around Mont Royal through the valley of the Moselle loop . In Traben-Trarbach, the district road 64 branches off towards the north leading to the Mont Royal.
The Moselwein-Bahn (Traben-Trarbach- Bullay ) railway line runs east past Mont Royal through the Moselle valley, in which the river is dammed by the Enkirch barrage .
