description

inflorescence

The naked fruit is a subshrub that reaches heights of 10 to 50 cm. The stem is upright and heavily branched. The bark is ash gray. The leaves are opposite or tufted, sessile, 5 to 18 mm long, linear-rolling and prickly. The white, ciliate stipules are 1.5 to 2 mm long.

The inflorescence consists of terminal, densely packed, mostly 7 to 15-flowered dichasias . The bracts are leaf-like, with small stipules and 2 to 4 mm long, awl blade. The flowers are fleshy and sessile. The sepals are 5 to 7 mm long, green to reddish brown in color, with broad skin margins, hood-shaped at the tip, prickly and hairy. The stamens are 1.4 to 2.0 mm long. The awl staminodes have a length of 1.2 to 1.5 mm. The ovary is in the middle and sunk into the flower axis at the base. The stylus is 2.0 to 2.75 mm long. The fruit measures 2.0 to 2.5 mm and is narrowly ellipsoidal, densely papillae and orange-brown in color. The seeds are 2.0 to 2.25 mm long, ellipsoidal and dark brown.

The flowering period extends from February to May.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.

Distribution and location

The naked fruit is found in the semi-desert regions of North Africa ( Canary Islands except La Palma and El Hierro , Morocco , Algeria , Tunisia , Libya , Egypt ) and the Middle East ( Sinai Peninsula , Israel , Jordan , Syria , Saudi Arabia , Oman , Iran , Afghanistan and Pakistan ) in front. The species grows on limestone corridors up to heights of about 1500 m. She avoids direct exposure to salt and sandy soils. It is a species of the Pegano-Salsoletea class. The plants are eaten by goats and camels.

Taxonomy
