The Nachal Sorek ( Hebrew נחל שורק, also transcribed Nahal Sorek or Nahal Soreq ), Arabic Wadi Surar , is a river in Israel . It is already mentioned in the Old Testament as the boundary between the Philistines and the Dan tribe . The Soreq Nuclear Research Center, built in 1955, is located on the river .
course
The Sorek has its source in the West Bank south of the city of Ramallah (northwest of the disused Jerusalem airport Atarot ). It flows from north to south through the Palestinian governorate of Jerusalem and swings to the southwest as soon as it touches the city of Jerusalem . In this direction it flows through the western suburbs of Jerusalem, where it is dammed at the moshav Beit Zayit to form the Beit Zayit reservoir . Southwest of Jerusalem it meets the Jerusalem – Jaffa railway line , which until then had followed the Nachal Refa'im tributary and now follows the winding valley of the Sorek flowing west. Behind Bet Schemesch , the river swings to the northwest, and soon afterwards the railway leaves the course of the river in the direction of Rechovot , while the river approaches the Mediterranean, into which it flows north of the Kibbutz Palmachim .
area
The Nachal Sorek Regional Administration is a local government named after the Nachal Sorek River.
In 2010, the cabinet approved the construction of the "world's largest water treatment and desalination plant" in this area, which went into operation in 2013. In June 2018 it was decided to build a sixth plant, the second in Sorek.
