Narragansett is a small town in the US state of Rhode Island , on a peninsula in the bay of the same name . It is named after the Narraganset Indian tribe who settled in what is now Rhode Island.
The city has only existed as an independent parish since 1901, before it was part of South Kingstown . However, the first white settlers can be traced back to 1675. The construction of sailing ships was the earliest industrial form of settlement. The regular ferry service to Jamestown and Newport was a lucrative source of income for the residents in the 18th century - until the bridge over Narragansett Bay was built. The name of the church "South Ferry Church" still reminds of this today.
Narragansett has been known as a summer resort since the late 19th century. The casino, which was mainly made of wood, burned down in 1900, only the two massive gate towers made of natural stone remained on the beach promenade. Today they are the symbol of the city.
Narragansett has several fine sandy beaches that are great for surfing. This means that the number of inhabitants almost doubles in summer.
From the port of Galilee, a ferry leads to Block Island , an island with sandy beaches and nature reserves. In Galilee, a district of Narragansett, there are some fish restaurants, whose specialty is freshly caught lobster. Also worth seeing is the lighthouse at Point Judith , south of it , built in 1816, today a US Coastguard station .
Narragansett is the location of the University of Rhode Island (URI) Bay Campus in Kingston. Two of the university's research ships are stationed there.

The triathlon Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island has been held in Narragansett every July since 2008 .

Parts of the Hollywood film " Me, Both & Them" with Jim Carrey and Renée Zellweger were filmed in Narragansett.
