Nassau Landesbank
The Nassauische Landesbank is a former credit institute in the Duchy of Nassau , based in Wiesbaden . It existed from 1840 to 1953.
history
On January 23, 1840, the Landeskreditanstalt Nassau was founded in Wiesbaden as a state bank. She offered mortgage , municipal, and commercial loans . Savings deposits and deposits from the state treasury were used for refinancing . The bank also issued banknote-like state credit notes and thus had the character of a central bank . A state guarantee existed for the deposits.
In 1848 the institute was renamed Nassauische Landesbank. From 1863 it was granted the right to issue Pfandbriefe .
With the annexation of Nassau by the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866 there were fundamental changes for the Nassauische Landesbank. In 1869 the bank was split up. The Nassauische Sparkasse (Naspa) was split off as a savings bank , the Nassauische Landesbank itself remained as a pure real estate credit institution . The Nassau Municipal Parliament was responsible for the bank's controllers and the regulations under which they worked .
On June 1, 1953, the Hessische Landesbank Girozentrale was created from the merger of the Hessische Landesbank Darmstadt Girozentrale (founded in 1940), the Nassauische Landesbank Wiesbaden and the Landeskreditkasse zu Kassel (founded 1832).
The Nassauische Landesbank as the central bank
In 1840 (interest-bearing) credit notes for 1 and 5 guilders were issued. Another 25 guilder note followed in 1841. These remained in circulation until 1856. In 1856 banknotes were issued in denominations of 5 and 25 guilders. A 10 guilder note followed in 1859. The last banknote issue took place in 1865 with banknote series of 5 and 50 guilders. The Nassauische Landesbank had a banknote monopoly. It was forbidden by law in Nassau since 1856 to accept foreign banknotes. The only exceptions were banknotes from some large German states such as Prussia, Saxony or Hesse.
In 1866 the Nassau banknotes were withdrawn and replaced by Prussian banknotes.
The Nassauische Landesbank continued to issue emergency money in 1918, 1922 and 1923 .
