Flogging Molly (engl. "Molly whipped" ) is an Irish - American folk punk-rock band from Los Angeles , USA . There she was founded in 1997 in Molly Malone's Pub . Their music is a mixture of elements from Irish folklore and punk music . The traditional Irish line-up of folk guitar , mandolin , banjo , accordion , fiddle and tin whistle is reinforced by the typical punk music instruments of electric guitar , electric bass and drums .

history

The from Dublin native Dave King was "One-Number-fan" of the folk-inspired at a young age of the heavy metal band Mama's Boys , the later than Celtus gave the Irish folk even more space. Inspired in this way, King accepted the vocal post with the heavy metal band Fastway , which was active in the late 1980s and early 1990s and in which the former Motörhead guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke also played. After King left Fastway in 1988 and his Kathmandu project failed, he occasionally played in pubs. Over time, other musicians joined him until Flogging Molly was founded in 1997. The band at that time consisted of Dave King (vocals and acoustic guitar), Bridget Regan (violin), George Schwindt (drums), Ted Hutt (guitar), Toby Mc Callum (mandolin) and Jeff Peters (bass). The first album, Alive Behind the Green Door , was recorded at Molly Malone’s Pub in Los Angeles in 1997 and was self-distributed to raise money for the band. In 2005 this album was re-released by SideOneDummy Records . Between 1997 and 2001 there were some changes in the line-up. The final line-up, which lasted through January 2007, was: Dave King, Bridget Regan, Dennis Casey, Matt Hensley , Nathen Maxwell, George Schwindt and Robert "Bob" Schmidt. After signing a contract with Side One Dummy Records, the album Swagger , produced by Steve Albini and released in Europe on the Swedish label Burning Heart Records , followed in 2000 . With the Drunken Lullabies , which were completed in 2002, the band was able to place themselves at number 157 on the Billboard Charts in 2002 , the successor Within a Mile of Home made it to number 20 and number 1 on the Billboard Indie Charts in 2004.

In early 2007, Matt Hensley left the band to spend more time with his family. He was replaced when performing live during this time by PJ Smith and Damien O'Merril. In the fall of 2007 Matt returned to the band and can be heard on the album Float , which was released on March 4, 2008.

On May 27, 2011, the album Speed of Darkness was released in the United States, the single Don't Shut 'em Down was previously available as a free download.

In 2015, Flogging Molly embarked on a cruise called The Salty Dog Cruise. It lasts three nights and four days and leads from Miami via two stations in the Bahamas ( Nassau and a private island) back to the starting point. In 2016 the festival date coincides with St. Patrick's Day. The lineup includes some greats from the Irish folk and punk genre.

In 2017 the album Life Is Good was released. Mike Alonso has been the new drummer in the band since 2016.
