The National Party of South West Africa (NPSWA, rarely also SWANP; Afrikaans Nasionale Party van Suidwes-Afrika , German  National Party South West Africa s ) was a political party in South West Africa , today's Namibia .

history

The party was originally founded on July 26, 1924 by Frikkie Jooste in Mariental in the central south of the country. Its membership structure was subsequently made up of Afrikaans and English speakers who supported the integration of South West Africa into the South African Union . It won three seats in the elections for the South West African Legislative Assembly in 1926 , while the German League in South West Africa won seven of the total of 12 seats. On January 31, 1927, the party merged with the South West Party , which had two seats, to form the United National South West Party (UNSWP / VNSWP).

On July 28, 1939, the party was re-established under its original name and united an Afrikaans and German-speaking membership structure with the intention of joining South West Africa as the fifth South African province. She immediately won two seats again in the 1940 election to the South West African Legislative Assembly . The remaining mandates went to the UNSWP. In the elections to the South West African Legislative Assembly in 1945 , she lost both seats. As a result of the 1950 election , the South African sister party Nasionale Party took 15 of the 18 seats. It dominated politics in South West Africa including the elections until 1974 .

In 1977 the moderate wing of the party around Dirk Mudge split off , and on October 5, 1977 he founded the Republican Party . Most recently, the party took part in the first free elections in Namibia in 1989 as part of Action Christian National . In 1991 the party was dissolved; Party leader Kosie Pretorius founded the Monitor Action Group .
