The National Liberation Movement ( Russian: Национально-освободительное движение , Nazionalno-oswoboditelnoje dvischenije ), or NOD for short , is a political movement in Russia . Its aim is to increase the influence of the Russian Federation until it has reached a state similar to that of the Soviet Union before 1991.

The organization's motto is “Home! Freedom! Putin! ”And its symbol is the St. George's ribbon .

profile

The National Liberation Movement was founded in 2011 in the wake of the anti-fraud protests in the 2011 parliamentary elections .

The movement aims to take revenge for the perceived “humiliation” of Russia - the collapse of the Soviet Union, the economic crisis and political unrest of the 1990s - and to restore Russian sovereignty throughout the former Soviet Union. The group combines radical anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism with Russian imperialism and a personality cult around Putin. According to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution , the NOD movement practically represents “Great Russian”, Eurasian positions and would like to revise the position of power that has waned after the end of the Soviet Union. The position on the role of the United States would tie in with the ideas of German right-wing extremists . NOD has a close ideological connection to the Russian political course determined by Putin. Wolfgang Eichwede said that Russia stands for a right-wing nationalist policy, but at the same time skilfully avails itself of left prejudices against America. With NOD, Putin shows that he has mastered all elements of power politics, "including subversion ". The movement is rated as nationalist to right-wing extremist.

Actions

The NOD movement organized counter-demonstrations to the Ukrainian Euromaidan protests. As part of its work, NOD supports pro-Russian fighters in the Ukraine war and denounces critics of President Putin's policy on the Internet as traitors. Observers see the movement as a facade for covert actions by the Russian government. NOD was involved in the formation of the self-proclaimed " Donetsk People's Republic ".

Groups of NOD activists sometimes take massive action against opposition and dissenters, actions and events are disrupted by NOD supporters. In spring 2014, NOD members harassed a group of human rights activists in Samara who were protesting against the annexation of Crimea . In late April 2016, NOD activists stormed the awards ceremony for a history competition organized by the Russian human rights organization Memorial . The NOD supporters attacked the Kremlin critic Lyudmila Ulitskaya . Other participants were insulted with anti-Semitic abuse and German participants were labeled as fascists . The police did nothing.

On May 1, 2018, activists assigned to the NOD disrupted a festival which, according to the organizers, would have wanted to promote human rights and freedoms. Again the police did nothing.

organization

The chairman of the association is the right-wing nationalist Duma member Yevgeny Fyodorov . His deputy coordinates the various regional branches of the association. This also includes an offshoot in Germany that was linked to the Reich Citizens Movement through press research by the newspaper Die Zeit . Russian NOD claims to have around 170,000 followers. NOD coordinator Maria Katasonova organized rallies in support of Marine Le Pen and Donald Trump . She is running for parliament on the Rodina Party's list .
