The National Zoo of Bangladesh ( Bengali বাংলাদেশ জাতীয় চিড়িয়াখানা Bāṃlādeś Jātīẏa Ciṛiẏākhānā , Bangladesh Jatio Chiriakhana ) is a zoo in the Mirpur section of Dhaka , the capital of Bangladesh . The zoo is home to many native and non-native animals and wildlife and has around three million visitors each year. The name of the zoo was changed from Dhaka Zoo to National Zoo of Bangladesh on February 5, 2015.

Established in 1974, the 75- acre National Zoo of Bangladesh is the largest zoo in Bangladesh and is operated by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. The zoo attracts around 10,000 visitors every day, and the trend is increasing on weekends and holidays. The zoo is also known for its poor conditions for animals and the corruption of its officials.

The annual budget of the National Zoo of Bangladesh is 37.5 million taka , of which 25 million taka are spent on feeding the animals.

history

On December 26, 1950, the Ministry of Agriculture, Cooperation and Aid officially announced that it would establish a zoo in Dhaka. Hence, the zoo started off near Dhaka High Court with several axis deer, monkeys and elephants around this time. The zoo later relocated to showcase the maid Eid-Gah with more animals. Later in 1961, a board was created to ensure the proper management of the zoo. Later, after the acquisition of animals from home and abroad, the zoo was opened on June 23, 1974 at its current location.

Animals

2150 animals from 134 species currently live in the zoo.

The zoo is home to 58 species of mammals , including elephants , cheetahs , rhinos , zebras , waterbuck , otters , hyenas , deer , giraffes , impalas , collar bears , tapirs, hippos, lions, many types of monkeys (including chimpanzees and baboons), and Bengal tigers .

More than 1500 birds from 91 species live in the zoo's bird houses , including peacocks , rheas , gray parrots , cassowaries , owls , ostriches , emus , teals , finches , Australian sabers , vultures and eagles . The zoo's two lakes are also home to migratory waterfowl every winter .

criticism

Following a series of zoo animal deaths in 2009, the zookurator and deputy curator were temporarily suspended and a committee of inquiry was formed. The zoo management claimed their main problem was the lack of veterinarians (there was only one doctor) and they had already requested additional veterinary staff.

The zoo has been classified as corrupt by international authorities , and when two black rhinos were sent from South Africa to Dhaka in 2013 , conservation groups in South Africa raised concerns about the appalling treatment of animals, calling it a "hellhole".
