The Homert Nature Park was an area of around 550 km² that was designated as a nature park in 1965 . To May 1, 2015, he went along with the natural parks Ebbegebirge and Rothaargebirge in the Natural Park Sauerland Rothaar on. The former nature park is located in the Sauerland , between the Lennetal in the southwest and the Ruhr valley area in the northeast. The park was named Homert from its highest elevation in the southeast, the 656 meter high Homert in the Lenne mountains .

The Arnsberg Forest Nature Park connects to the northeast of the area . The former Rothaargebirge Nature Park bordering in the southeast and the former Ebbegebirge Nature Park bordering in the southwest have been part of the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park since 2015, like the Homert Nature Park itself.

The varied landscape of the area is characterized by forest , arable land and grassland, river valleys, bizarre cliffs and rock formations, especially in the Hönnetal along the Hönne . The edge areas of the Hönnetal have a particularly rich flora and fauna. There were occurrences of various juniper mountain heaths. Some parts of the nature park are - beyond the nature park status - protected as nature or landscape protection areas.

Due to clearing in past centuries, only a little more than half of the area of the former nature park is forested. The Sorpesee and the Hennetalsperre are located in the area . The banks of the dams are breeding areas for grebes and other water bird species in some places . A few breeding pairs of the red kite , black stork and common raven breed in the nature park .

Among the natural attractions of the area, among other things include rock sea Hemer , the Balver cave , which is the largest cultural cave in Germany, the Reckenhöhle in Balve and Heinrichshöhle in Hemer with a completely preserved, about 150,000 year old skeleton of a cave bear .

The entire area is criss-crossed by marked hiking and cycling trails.
