description

Bomb crater from the Second World War in the forest south (outside) of the nature reserve

The 22.8 hectare nature reserve was created after extensive excavations for the construction of the Hammer marshalling yard . The area was heavily bombed during the Second World War . These bomb craters have also ragged the area. The nature reserve is divided into a limestone moor , which is surrounded by forest and green areas. The center is an approximately 100 year old marl pit with partially silted up still waters that have formed in the bomb craters. It is overgrown with species of limestone bogs, reed beds , gray willow bushes , small sedge and pipe grass . The core zone is flanked by species-rich dry limestone meadows and deciduous forest, consisting of poplar and gray alder . The nature reserve is partially interspersed with old stocks of oak , red oak , hornbeam and black alder .

The vegetation in the core zone with several types of orchids, for example broad-leaved orchid and other rare species, is remarkable . This is what characterizes the nature reserve, and it is also important as a stepping stone biotope in the national biotope network.

Protection goals

The protection goals for the Gallberg nature reserve are to secure a species-rich humid complex and, in particular, to preserve the orchid sites. Regular maintenance should prevent these rooms from becoming overgrown. The long-term removal of the non-native woody poplar and gray alder in favor of an original forest mix should be achieved.
