The Tippelsberg-Berger Mühle nature reserve is located in the north of the North Rhine-Westphalian city ​​of Bochum , in the area of ​​the Bergen district . Tippelsberg-Berger Mühle borders the A 43 in the south and, with 53.56 hectares, is the city's largest nature reserve. The nature reserve was designated in 1989 and incorporated into the landscape plan in 1998 .

In the nature reserve Tippelsberg-Berger Mühle are the sources of the Dorneburger Mühlenbach , it is characterized by beech and oak as well as by alder and ash forests. There are various decade-old reservoirs in the nature reserve . During the spawning season , the city installs so-called toad fences here .

The nature reserve has a large variety of plant and animal species, including several species that have become rare in the Ruhr area . These include eleven species that are on the country's red list . These are grasshopper warbler , redstart , midwife toad , common frog , green woodpecker , cuckoo , buzzard , nightingale , oriole , moorhen and reed warbler . In Tippelsberg-Berger Mühle there are abundant occurrences of the giant horsetail , they are clearly the largest stocks within the city.

The area has a "high level of use by riders, walkers and other people looking for relaxation" because it is a large green area in the middle of the urbanized Ruhr area.

Protection goals

The protection goal in Tippelsberg-Berger Mühle is the preservation of flora and fauna , including “near-natural streams with spring swamps” and mixed forests on the valley slopes as stepping stone biotopes. The area is endangered by eutrophication and leisure activities, which are associated with damage caused by footsteps. The state office specifies the conservation of water bodies and landscape structures as well as hardwood cover as protective measures .
