Naxos ( Greek Νάξος ( f. Sg. )) Is a municipality on the Greek island of Naxos . The area of the municipality of Naxos in the west of the island of the same name covers about 30% of the island's area with 126.957 km².

Naxos was recognized as a rural community (kinotita) in 1912 and upgraded to urban community (dimos) in 1947 . In 1998, numerous neighboring communities were incorporated. On January 1, 2011, the island of Naxos was merged with the Small Cyclades to form the municipality of Naxos and Small Cyclades ; the area of the former municipality of Naxos has since formed one of the six municipal districts of the new municipality.
