Naya Raipur , also Nava Raipur or Atal Nagar , is a planned city under construction in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh . It is to replace Raipur as the capital of Chhattisgarh in the future . Important administrative bodies of the state have already moved to the city. The city lies between the national highways NH-53 and NH-30, about 17 km southeast of the capital Raipur. The Swami Vivekananda Airport separates Raipur and Naya Raipur.

Naya Raipur is India's seventh planned large city after Jamshedpur ( Jharkhand ), Bhubaneswar ( Odisha ), Gandhinagar ( Gujarat ), Chandigarh , Navi Mumbai ( Maharashtra ) and Durgapur ( West Bengal ) and the fourth among the capital cities.

Urban development

After the founding of the new federal state of Chhattisgarh in November 2000, the state government decided to create a planned new city, which should take over the function of capital. A comprehensive study was carried out to find a perfect location for the city near the previous capital, Raipur. An imaginary circle with a radius of 50 km was drawn around Raipur and this area was divided into four quadrants. Each quadrant was then analyzed in the context of regional development, existing development, climatic factors, flora and fauna, water resources, transport network, etc. Ultimately, the location fell at a point just under 15 kilometers from Raipur's airport.

The Naya Raipur Development Authority (now renamed Atal Nagar Vikas Pradhikaran) was commissioned to plan the city . Compared to most existing Indian cities, the city should have a lot of green spaces and be developed under the concept of the Smart City . About half of the total land acquired is used for public institutions; 23% of the land would be reserved for government and educational institutions; and 30% of the land is used for residential and commercial purposes. The city is expected to be home to approximately 560,000 people by phase 3 of the project in 2031. For the economic development of the city, specific industries and technology parks are to be established. Several universities and hospitals are also under construction.

Sports

Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium , which opened in 2008 and is the second largest cricket stadium in India with 65,000 seats, is located in Naya Raipur .
