The Neja ( Russian Не́я ) is a right tributary of the Unscha in the Kostroma Oblast in Russia .

The Neja rises on the Galitscher Heights in Tschuchloma Rajon . It initially flows in an easterly direction and passes the Parfenjewo district administrative center . Later it turns to the southeast and finally to the south. In the city of Neja , the Nelscha , its most important tributary, flows into the river on the left. The Neja finally reaches the Unscha, a left tributary of the Volga, 10 km south of Makarjew .

The Neja has a length of 253 km. It drains an area of ​​6060 km². It is mainly fed by the snowmelt . The mean discharge 38 km above the mouth is 45.5 m³ / s. The river is ice-covered between November and April.

In the past, rafting was operated on the Neja .
