nectarine

The nectarine is a mutation of the peach with smooth instead of the otherwise slightly furry skin.

features

The skin of the nectarine is smooth. It is yellowish inside, the white nectarine is pale yellow. The stone can hardly be distinguished from a normal peach stone.

The smooth skin is a recessive genetic trait, so peach trees may occasionally carry nectarines or a peach tree may grow from a nectarine stone. Therefore nectarine be asexually by budding on a peach or plum pad propagated.

The nectarine was already known in China , Persia and Greece at the turn of the century , and has been cultivated in England since the 17th century. The nectarine only became popular in the last few decades, mainly through cultivation in the United States . It is mainly grown in Italy , France , Spain , Greece , California , Chile and South Africa . The widespread assumption that nectarine is a cross between peach and plum is a modern legend .

The physiological calorific value is approx. 225  kJ / 100 g (= 53  kcal / 100 g), depending on the water and sugar content. The seeds of the nectarine are very poisonous if consumed in excess, as they contain around 8 percent of amygdalin which splits off hydric acid.

Diseases

  • Curl disease , caused by the fungus Taphrina deformans: It shows up in the form of curled leaves with blistering in the early stages of budding and lasts until temperatures above 16 degrees are reached.
  • Monilia Fruit rot, a fungal disease caused by Monilia, which causes ring-shaped brown circles on the fruit.
