Plant and exhibits

Nelson's Dockyard was named after the former commander, Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson .

The hurricane-proof natural harbor was first used by the English in 1671. The first buildings were built in 1725, and the naval port was expanded intensively from 1743 onwards. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was considered the most important naval base in Great Britain in the Lesser Antilles to protect the local colonies and merchant ships from attacks. It was Nelson's main base in the Caribbean during the Napoleonic Wars of the 1800s and 1810s.

In the 1950s, the Friends of English Harbors Association took care of the facility, and it was reopened in 1961. Today it is  looked after by National Parks Antigua (NPA). The former workshops, residential buildings and warehouses are now used for tourism after loving restoration, including as a hotel and exclusive marina . The buildings that can be visited today all date from the period 1785–1792.

Today the area is one of the largest open-air museums in the Caribbean and can be visited daily. The annual Antigua Sailing Week takes place in front of the harbor.
