The fire sword goby ( Nemateleotris magnifica ) is a species from the goby family . It lives in the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Ryūkyū Islands , in Micronesia , Hawaii , on the Great Barrier Reef , east to Pitcairn and south to New Caledonia , at depths of 6 to 90 meters on the upper areas of the outer reefs .

The fish are nine centimeters long and have an elongated body with a long dorsal fin in two parts and a long anal fin . The front rays of the first dorsal fin are significantly longer in the fire sword goby than in the other two Nemateleotris species. The animals move this crescent-shaped fin part back and forth, twitching.

Fin formula : dorsal 1 VI, dorsal 2 I / 28–32, anal I / 27–30.

Fire sword gobies live in pairs and are monogamous . Mostly they stand a few meters above the ground in the current and catch their food consisting of zooplankton . In the event of danger, the animals quickly retreat into a cave that can also be used by several animals.

Like the other two members of the genus Nemateleotris , the fire sword goby is caught for the purpose of keeping the aquarium . The fish in the aquarium are shy and should not be kept together with lively larger fish. After a while, only one pair of a larger group remains. Fire sword gobies are short-lived and only live to be two to three years old.
