Neochori ( Greek Νεοχώρι ( n. Sg. ), New village ') is a village and a local community on the Greek Pelio peninsula and belongs to the municipality of Afetes of the municipality of Notio Pilio . The village is located in the middle of a pine forest about 35 kilometers southeast of the city of Volos at 480 meters above sea level .
The on the shores of the Aegean places lying Agios Dimitrios , Plaka and Kloussou also belong to the field of local community NEOCHORI ( Τοπική Κοινότητα Νεοχωρίου Topikí Kinótita Neochoríou ) as the small port Afissos , one of the most popular tourist centers of Pelion on the Pagasitic Gulf , as well as the settlement Zervochia .
The center of Neochori forms a village square, which is adorned by ancient plane trees and linden trees and a covered fountain from 1807. There is also a tavern and a small kafenio here . Below the square is the main church of the village, the Agios Dimitros Church, built in 1768. The church, simple on the outside, has carved iconostases inside and icons painted by the Epirotic painter Pagonis . In the right aisle there is a small museum with ecclesiastical art treasures from the area.
Neochori is famous for its slate quarries , which provide a livelihood for many people in the area. Typical products from Neochori and the surrounding area are honey , apples and olives .
In June 2007, a severe forest fire raged around the place, devastating considerable parts of the pine forest and threatening the place. The forest is only recovering slowly and the damage is visible even after a decade.
history
The entire area from the Aegean Sea to the Pagasitic Gulf has always been populated. However, Neochori was not built until the Middle Ages by residents of the surrounding settlements as well as by Aegean and northern Greek settlers.
The history of the area around Neochóri begins in ancient times ; we know of the mythological Afetai , the myths of the kingdom of Lai and there are reports of Minoan settlements and settlers at Cape Klossou , Agios Dimitrios , which is described as "Knossou" in many old maps. The historians Strabo and Herodotus wrote reports about Afetai.
