description
Vegetative characteristics
Neosepicaea species are lianas . The bark is hairless to finely hairy.
The opposite arranged leaves are divided into a relatively long petiole and a leaf blade. The imparipinnate leaf blade consists of three or five pinnate leaves.
Generative characteristics
The terminal or lateral inflorescences are thyrsenic and contain bracts and many flowers.
The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five sepals are fused cup-shaped to bell-shaped. The brown, red or orange to pink crown is short bell-shaped and often curved. The four fertile stamens do not protrude beyond the crown. The anthers are hairless, their counters spread apart. A staminodium is formed next to the stamens . The ovary is elongated, covered with fine scales, and each ovary chamber includes a plurality of ovules . The ovary stands on a cup-shaped flower base .
The calyx can be permanent on the fruit or it can fall off beforehand. The stalked capsule fruits with fine scales are elongated, linear in shape and have a rotating cross-section. The fruit valves are hairless. The seeds are rectangular with a thin wing.
Systematics and distribution
The genus Neosepicaea was established in 1922 with the first description of Neosepicaea viticoides Diels by Ludwig Diels in Botanical Yearbooks for Systematics, Plant History and Plant Geography , 57, page 500. Synonyms for Neosepicaea Diels are: Haussmannia F.Muell. , Haussmannianthes steenis .
The genus Neosepicaea belongs to the tribe Tecomeae within the family Bignoniaceae .
The species of the genus Neosepicaea occur in New Guinea and Queensland .
The genus Neosepicaea contains about four species:
- Neosepicaea aurantiaca (Diels) Steenis : This endemic occurs only in eastern New Guinea.
- Neosepicaea jucunda (F.Muell.) Steenis : It occurs only in the Australian state of Queensland.
- Neosepicaea leptophylla (flower) Steenis : It occurs in New Guinea.
- Neosepicaea viticoides Diels : It occurs in New Guinea and Queensland.
