Nephrolepis cordifolia is a plant from the genus of nephrolepis ( Nephrolepis ). It is originally native to the tropics , but is a popular houseplant .

description

Nephrolepis cordifolia is an evergreen fern that reaches heights of between 40 and 80 centimeters, in extreme cases up to 1 meter. It forms an underground rhizome in the shape of several small tubers. The pinnate fronds stand upright and are linear to lanceolate, glandular and simply pinnate. The rachis has two-colored chaff scales.

The leaflets are entire, sessile and oblong-lanceolate. They become up to 4.8 inches long and up to 0.9 cm wide. They stand at a distance of less than 1 centimeter. The sori are plump. The spores are warty, wrinkled.

ecology

Nephrolepis cordifolia can grow both terrestrially and as an epiphyte . As an epiphyte, the species is very rare.

distribution

Naturally, Nephrolepis cordifolia occurs in Australia and on the slopes of the Himalayas. As a neophyte , however, the species was able to spread in parts of the United States ( Florida , Georgia , Alabama and Hawaii ), as well as in New Zealand , the Azores and the Society Islands . In the USA the species is being controlled as an invasive plant . In New Zealand, the species is listed in the National Pest Plant Accord , so that the sale, propagation and distribution of the plant is prohibited.

It loves moist, shady locations and is often found in swamps and floodplain areas in coniferous forests .
