The reticulated barberry ( Berberis dictyophylla ) is a species of plant from the genus of barberries ( Berberis ) in the family of the barberry family (Berberidaceae) originating from China .

description

The reticulated barberry is a dense, deciduous (deciduous) shrub that reaches heights of up to 2 meters. The bark of the young twigs is blue-white, later red-brown. The small leaves are obovate, with entire margins or spiky teeth, glossy green on top and chalky white on the underside. The leaf spines are one to three parts and up to 1.5 cm long. The light yellow flowers are solitary and appear in late spring. The large red berries are frosted white.

distribution

The home of the reticulated barberry is in western China . It was introduced to Europe in 1916.

use

Like many other barberries, this species is used as an ornamental shrub.

Systematics

The variety Berberis dictyophylla var. Epruinosa C.K. Cutting. has reddish-brown twigs even when young and green leaves underneath. The variety Berberis dictyophylla var. Approximata (Sprague) Rehder is sometimes referred to as Berberis approximata Sprague .
