New Apostolic Church and Community House

The New Apostolic Church, built between 1933 and 1934, and the parish hall are located at Zelterstrasse 13 and Dunckerstrasse 31 in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg . It was designed by Bruno Nerlich.

history

The emergence of the apostolic congregations goes back to the 1830s. Twelve apostles were called in the United Kingdom , including Thomas Carlyle , to prepare Christianity for the near Parousia . These men founded the Catholic-Apostolic congregations that gained a foothold in Germany after 1842. Carlyle moved to Berlin in January 1848. On March 19, an apostolic rite service was celebrated for the first time in Berlin . At the end of the 19th century, the communities continued to grow. During this time the four main congregations of the New Apostolic Church arose in the Berlin area, namely the congregations Schöneberg, Nordwest (today Charlottenburg), Reinickendorf and Tempelhof. The number of members continued to rise, so that on April 1, 1911 another congregation, today's Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg congregation, with around 130 members was founded. The church was initially located in a factory . From September 3, 1922, the auditorium of the former Königsstädtischer Oberlyzeum in Greifswalder Strasse served as a meeting room. Due to the steady growth of the community, this space was soon too small. Therefore, in 1933/34, a separate church was built on Dunckerstraße at the corner of Zelter Straße, which was inaugurated on September 16, 1934. At that time the church did not have an organ , the instrument used was a harmonium . It was not until 1938 that the church received an organ from the church in Johannesstift , which received a new organ. Except for minor damage, the church survived World War II . In the years 1958/59 the church was renovated and the house and the offices were converted for the administration. At the end of the sixties the community was renamed “Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg”. An electronic organ was installed to replace the organ on the choir gallery . The large window in the gable on the back wall of the choir loft was replaced by a concrete stained glass window in which the emblem of the New Apostolic Church is reproduced. The electronic organ became prone to failure over time, so a new organ from the Sauer company was purchased, which was inaugurated on July 8, 1984. On June 18, 2017, the previous church districts Eberswalde and Berlin-Nord merged to form the new district Berlin-Brandenburg-Nord for financial reasons.
