Church in the Johannesstift

history

Because of the establishment of the Westhafen in Moabit , the Evangelical Johannesstift near the Plötzensee was relocated to the Spandau Forest . The architects Hermann Solf and Franz Wichards carried out Kuhlmann's design. The residential buildings were built between 1907 and 1910, the church between 1914 and 1917. Its interior was first rebuilt by Winfried Wendland in 1936. The actual stylistic adjustment was carried out by Karl Wilhelm Ochs in 1967–1968 . The last time the church was redesigned was in 2003.

Building description

The neo-renaissance architectural style of the church symbolizes the end of the Wilhelmine era . Still sounds in the with clinkers deluded masonry already the Modern on.

The short nave of the church, covered with a gable roof , and the stubby arms of the transept , which also have gable roofs, make the building appear as a central building on the floor plan of a pressed Latin cross . However, it can also be viewed as a basilica because the central nave has narrow aisles . The recessed polygonal choir has low extensions .

The barrel vault in the central nave is designed like a reticulated vault . During the renovation in the 1960s, the galleries on the side were connected to the gallery on the entrance side, on which the organ stands. The choir windows were extended to the floor. At this time, the pergolas were also attached to the right and left of the portal . Karl Wilhelm Ochs also had the decorative painting and historical furnishings removed.

The building is dominated by the 56 meter high, mighty, stepped bell tower above the crossing . His octagonal, curved and slate-covered helmet carries a lantern .

organ

Since 1928-1998 in Johannesstift the Berlin School of Church Music was, the church received a 1937/1938 Kemper - organ . It was replaced in 1968 by a large Walcker organ , which was overhauled and expanded by Otto Hoffmann in 2003. With 64 stops on four manuals and pedal , it is one of the largest organs in Berlin.

Bells

In the bell room with a square floor plan (side length 2.4 m) hangs a ringing made of four bronze bells , whereby the small bell is only used as a chiming bell. At the inauguration of the church, the community had a three-part ring made of cast steel bells that had been cast by the Bochum Association . An inventory list of the foundry contains the following information: the ensemble of bells with clapper, bearing, axes and chime lever cost 1,551 marks to manufacture .

These bells were probably no longer usable by the Diakoniegemeinde before the First World War , so that a complete ring of high-quality bell bronze was commissioned and installed. It is not known whether bells were requested as a metal donation from the German people during the wars and were later replaced.
