The new church with the steeple of St. Marien

The New Church is a listed church building on the St.-Marien-Kirchhof in Wismar in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). The ship of the nearby Marienkirche could not be used due to war damage and so an emergency church had to be built for the parishioners of St. Georgen and St. Marien, which was intended as a temporary solution. This interim solution is still in place today; the church serves the Evangelical Lutheran parish Wismar St. Marien / St. Georgen in the Propstei Wismar, Mecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany .

History and architecture

The Protestant parish church was built in 1950/1951 according to a type B emergency church design with a polygonal chancel by Otto Bartning and consecrated by Regional Bishop Niklot Beste . Rubble bricks from the rectory of St. Mary's Church, which had been badly damaged after severe bombing, were used as building material . The New Church was supposed to only serve as a temporary measure until St. Mary's was rebuilt. In 1960 St. Marien was blown up for political reasons. The single- brick building of the temporary church with a pentagonal choir Final was the last of the emergency churches of the first HEKD-Kirchbauprogrammes built, it is with a gable roof covered. As supporting series elements in the interior are three joint Binder made of wood. The surrounding ribbon of windows under the main roof is attached to the wooden structure. The organ gallery is located above the community hall, which can be divided into the western part.

The Passion Altar

The Passion Altar from the beginning of the 15th century was originally in the Georgenkirche and is one of the saved works of art. The painted triptych was made in the workshop of the master of the Tempziner Altar and shows scenes from the Passion. It was probably relocated to Bützow at the end of the Second World War . The first conservation work was carried out in 1949, and the altar has been extensively renovated since 1999; it stands in front of a cross.
