New Albisrieden Church
The New Church Albisrieden is an Evangelical Reformed church building in the Albisrieden district of Zurich . It is located at Ginsterstrasse 54 northwest of the Catholic Church of St. Konrad .
Building history
Due to the population growth in Albisrieden in the 1940s, an extension to the old church built in 1817 was necessary . In 1946 a competition took place among six invited architects, which Hans Martin von Meyenburg was able to win. According to his plans, the church was built between 1949 and 1951.
Building description
Exterior
The elongated church center in the middle of a residential area includes, in addition to the church interior, various community rooms and apartments that were once occupied by the pastor and Sigrist . Stylistically, the church can be assigned to a moderate modern age , which does not dispense with conventional elements such as a hipped roof , but presents itself as a functionalist total work of art in terms of architecture and furnishings . The exterior is dominated by the 25 meter high polygonal church tower with a clock and an unusual spire in the form of a small onion dome.
foyer
The church is accessed via a foyer , which is illuminated through ceiling-high windows with an artistically executed grille. Doors, railings and lighting fixtures were designed in a uniform style based on the architect's design. A second wooden foyer provides access to the church.
inner space
The church , designed as a hall church, is 27 meters long, 16 meters wide and 7.5 meters high. The considerable size of the room enables lighting on the south and east sides through ceiling-high windows with tinted panes. On the northern long side there is a narrow lateral gallery , which is accessible via the foyer. The liturgy zone is five steps higher than the nave and is characterized by a monumental wooden cross and a tapestry . In contrast to the unfamiliar cross, the wall inscription according to ( Joh 18,37 LUT ) is typical of a reformed sacred building . The wide liturgy zone, which only contains the unadorned pulpit and the Lord's Supper table as permanently installed items of equipment, offers space for music formations or scenic worship.
organ
The box-shaped organ is located in the north-west corner of the church . It was created in 1951 by Metzler Orgelbau and has three manuals , a pedal and 37 sounding registers . The position and shape of the organ, as well as the monumental cross and the floor plan, identify the New Church Altstetten , consecrated in 1941, as a model. In 1979 and 2004 the organ was overhauled by the builder company.
