The office building Global Tower (also known as former Commerzbank headquarters or Neue Mainzer Straße 32-36 ) is a high-rise building in the city of Frankfurt am Main .

The 108.6 meter high tower with 28 floors was completed in 1973, making it one of the first high-rise buildings in Frankfurt's banking district . Richard Heil is the architect of the building .

Building history

Commerzbank announced a competition for the construction in 1968. Seven architectural offices were invited: the Frankfurt offices Walter Maria Schultz , ABB Architects , Max Meid & Helmut Romeick and Richard Heil, the Düsseldorf offices HPP and Heinrich Rosskotten & Edgar Tritthart, and as an international architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe . The jury decided in favor of Richard Heil's design because he had good contacts with the city administration and made optimal use of the property.

The listed high-rise is reminiscent of famous buildings such as the Seagram Building in New York or the Toronto-Dominion Center in terms of shape, color and material and is considered a prime example of the elegance and reduced style of modern architecture.

The design for the associated multifunctional forum comes from Lord Norman Foster .

use

From 1974 to 1997, the Commerzbank building served as headquarters, then the administration moved to the new Commerzbank Tower , which is located on the neighboring property.

Today the building is no longer used by Commerzbank. A large part was rented to the European Central Bank (ECB) . Since November 2014, all ECB employees have moved to a new building in Ostend .

Revitalization

In 2016 the German Estate Group (GEG) bought the building from Commerzbank.

According to plans by Meyer Schmitz-Morkramer Architekten, the high-rise has been revitalized since the end of 2017. It is to be upgraded with modern, up to 2.80 m high offices, the latest building technology with heating / cooling ceilings and mechanical ventilation, roof terraces on the 4th and 25th floors and a two-story lobby. The investment volume is over 270 million euros. Completion is scheduled for 2020 under the name Global Tower .
