history

The New Boys Choir Hamburg emerged in 1991 from the Hamburg Boys Choir St. Nikolai . Brigitte Siebenkittel founded a cooperation with the State Youth Music School Hamburg. The New Boys' Choir Hamburg was born. After initial problems such as a lack of singers, the choir quickly celebrated its first successes and took part in the national choir competition in 1993, two years after it was founded. In 1998 they finally won second place at the Bundeschorwettbewerb in Regensburg . In 2003 the previous choir director Brigitte Siebenkittel said goodbye to the boys' choir. In their place came Ulrich Kaiser , a conductor who was active in his youth with the Dresden Kreuzchor and the Windsbach Boys Choir . Among other things, he expanded the choir to include several preliminary choirs and increased the number of singers in the concert choir. Ulrich Kaiser left the choir at the beginning of 2012 and took over the management of the MDR Children's Choir in Leipzig. He was succeeded at the same time by Jens Bauditz, also a former Kruzian .

In 2016 the choir celebrated its 25th anniversary. The highlights were the anniversary concert “Horizonte” and the release of the CD A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols .

repertoire

The choir is primarily committed to demanding a cappella music from all eras. Many of the works listed are by Heinrich Schütz or Johann Sebastian Bach , but also by Maurice Duruflé or Hermann von Reichenau . However, the boys accompany the concert choir and every year numerous performances of the St. Matthew Passion and were already talking about the War Requiem by Benjamin Britten , a Lord of the Rings Festival and the internationally renowned Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival participate. During the 2009 Christmas season, the choir sang four Bach cantatas and 2010 songs with organ improvisation. So far, the choir has participated in two productions of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus ( Rust a German Messiah and Whoever Eats Out of a Tin Bowl ). In autumn 2011 the choir celebrated its 20th anniversary and therefore organized a big anniversary concert together with the ensemble “ The Playfords ” from Leipzig in the main church St. Johannis in Harvestehude. In the years 2011–2015 the Christmas Oratorio (cantatas 1–3 and 6) was performed together with soloists and the Hamburg Baroque Orchestra.

In 2014, the Neue Knabenchor Hamburg took up an almost 100-year-old English tradition in its big Advent concert A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols . The choir was supported by the well-known Hamburg actor Peter Franke , who gave the readings. This was repeated in December 2015. This time Rufus Beck was won as speaker. In 2017 and 2018 the choir was supported by Katharina Thalbach .
