The Haldensleben – Eilsleben railway was a railway line in Saxony-Anhalt that connected the district town of Haldensleben with the Eilsleben railway junction .

geography

The route ran from Haldensleben in a mostly south-westerly direction to Eilsleben. Mostly flat, agriculturally used land of the northern Magdeburger Börde is crossed. There are only villages along the route. The course of the route is noticeably winding, as it primarily had to serve the existing sugar factories.

In the area between Haldensleben and Eilsleben, a total of five sugar factories were established between 1865 and 1883 . In addition, a railway line was needed to carry numerous other agricultural goods. The Neuhaldensleber Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft was founded on November 30th, 1886 to enable the construction of the line in what was then the Prussian province of Saxony . Freight traffic began between Neuhaldensleben and Hakenstedt on October 17, 1887, passenger traffic and the rest of the goods traffic on November 3, 1887. Operation was carried out by the Central Administration for Secundairbahnen Herrmann Bachstein . A planned branch line from Nordgermersleben to Alvensleben was not implemented.

Initially, the journey time on the 32-kilometer route was 90 to 120 minutes, as a lot of freight had to be transported at the same time. Later, travel times were reduced depending on the condition of the route.

From 1932 passenger traffic was carried out with a self-built towing car ; the passenger trains with goods transport that had operated up to that point no longer existed. Loading stations were set up at Erxleben - Uhrsleben and Schackensleben in the 1930s for the construction of the then Reichsautobahn Hanover – Magdeburg . On January 19, 1938, an industrial and port railway branching off the line was opened in Neuhaldensleben. This connected the train station with the new port on the Mittelland Canal .

A bus and coach service was added on January 1, 1939 under the company Kraftverkehr Haldensleben GmbH . After the city of Neuhaldensleben had changed its name to Haldensleben, from June 28, 1940 the name of the company was Haldensleber Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft AG .

During the Second World War, the route was spared major damage. It was occasionally used to bypass the Magdeburg railway junction .

From March 1, 1946, the railway was placed under state administration. From then on it was subordinate to the Saxon Provincial Railways GmbH . In the summer of 1947, the dismantling of the line was planned as a reparation payment . However, this could be prevented by the local SED district leadership. On August 15th, the Haldensleber Railway was expropriated . On April 1, 1949, the line was incorporated into the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

The number of pairs of passenger trains in the 1950s was three to five, which took at least 66 minutes for the route. In 1966 the travel time increased to around 90 minutes due to the poor superstructure . In 1971, the company was repaired and simplified, so that travel times were gradually reduced to around 56 minutes (1978).

After the turning point, the traffic decreased steadily. After the closure of the sugar factories, freight traffic, which ceased on December 31, 1994, suffered particularly badly. Passenger traffic was switched to two-hour intervals in 1996, with travel times again reduced. It drove railcars of series 771 . Nevertheless, the last passenger trains were running on May 29, 1999, as traffic through the state of Saxony-Anhalt was canceled. On December 22, 2000 the line was closed. The bridge over the Mittelland Canal was dismantled in March 2007. Only the port railway in Haldensleben is still operated today (as of July 2008).
