Świętoszów [ śfjen'toszuw ] ( German Neuhammer am Queis ) is a Schulzenamt of the rural municipality Osiecznica in the Powiat Bolesławiecki of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in southwest Poland . Until 1945 the place belonged to the German Empire .
history
In the late 19th century, the Neuhammer military training area for the Prussian army was built near the village . During the First World War , the facility also served as a prisoner-of-war camp for Russian soldiers.
During the Second World War , the Stalag VIII-E camp was set up on the military training area. It was initially occupied by Polish and French soldiers, and later again by Russian prisoners. At least 50,000 soldiers died of starvation and disease in the camp, and 200 more were shot dead by the NKVD when the camp was taken .
