The New Zealand Football Championship 2016/17 (for sponsorship reasons Stirling Sports Premiership 2016/17 ) was the thirteenth season of New Zealand's top division in men's football . With Eastern Suburbs AFC and Tasman United , two new franchises joined the league, WaiBOP United was replaced by the Hamilton Wanderers .

Initially, all teams played against each other in a league consisting of ten teams, so that each team played 18 games. The first four teams after the preliminary round qualified for the championship play-offs, the semi-finals of which were also played in a home and away game. Only one game was played in the final.
