The Newlands Valley is a valley in the Lake District , Cumbria , England . It is known as one of the most beautiful valleys in the Lake District.

location

The valley runs in a north-south direction. At its northern exit are the towns of Braithwaite and Portinscale . It is demarcated from Derwent Water to the east by Catbells . The chain of mountains to the east continues into Maiden Moor and High Spy . The Dale Head forms the southern end of the valley. To the west the valley is bounded by Hindscarth and Robinson . These mountains can be walked as a circular route on the 14 km Newlands Horseshoe Hike.

A small branch of the main valley branches off in a westerly direction to Newlands Pass . The Newlands Beck flows north from Dale Head and through the valley. The Keskadale Beck comes into the valley from Newlands Pass over the Moss Force waterfall.

history

Traces of settlement from the Bronze Age have been found in the valley, but most of the valley's names have their origins in Old Norse , which the settlers in the region spoke in the 8th century and which refer to the settlements of Keskadale, Skelgill, Birk Rigg, High Snab and Uzzicar Going back to Newlands Valley.

The valley's name is based on the fact that the drainage of swampy areas between Braithwaite and Portinscale in the 13th century made new land available as pastureland in the valley.

The Fischers, Tickells, Thwaites, Graves and Maysons families, who still live in the valley today, are mentioned in documents from the 15th century.

On the slopes of the valley, mining for lead , copper , silver and even gold was also operated by German miners until the 19th century . A mine at Hindscarth was so productive that the German miners called it Gottesgab .

The hamlet of Little Town and its Newlands Church were made literary famous by Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth .
