Newton is a Mennonite city and the county seat of Harvey County in the US state of Kansas . In the United States Census 2010 19,132 residents were counted. Newton is about 30 km north of Wichita , the largest city in Kansas.
history
In the first few years (between 1871 and 1873) Newton was known as "bloody and lawless - the most wicked town in the Wild West ", for example through the shooting at Hide Park .
The history of the city of Newton is closely linked to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway . It served as a dispatching hub for the "Santa Fe". Since the mid-1880s, however, this function has been outsourced to Chicago and the company now known as BNSF Railway is one of the largest railroad companies in the United States.
geography
The city's main drag is Highway 81, which runs from Canada to South America. Highway 50 also runs through the city, which runs from the White House in Washington, DC to Sacramento , California. Except for Sand Creek and a few small tributaries, there are no bodies of water in the 27.5 km² urban area of Newton.
Demographics
In 2000 Newton lived 17,190 people. There were 6,851 households and 4,610 families. The population density is 692.8 inhabitants / km². 86.73% of the population are white, 2.30% African, 0.53% Native American and 12.73% Hispanics or Latinos.
The median income for a household is $ 38,236 and the median income for a family is $ 45,703. 7.9% of the population lives below the poverty line.
culture and education
In addition to several elementary schools, there is Newton High School in the city . The school teams all bear the name "Newton Railers", based on the history of the city, which was heavily influenced by the railroad. There is also Bethel College in Newton.
The "Kaufmann Museum", also administered by Bethel College, deals with the subjects of prairies, indigenous people ( Cheyenne ), immigrant and Mennonite life.
