Newtown is a place in County Hamilton in the American state of Ohio , about 20 km east of downtown Cincinnati . The place is on the south bank of the Little Miami River . Newtown has about 2,400 inhabitants (as of the 2000 census ) - less than half of the 5,000 required here for the declaration of the city, and is therefore considered a " village ".
history
The place was first settled by whites in 1792 under the name Mercer's Station , including Captain Aaron Mercer, after whom the settlement was named. 1801 the place was parceled out by General James Taylor (1769-1848) and officially founded. The growth of the place was initially driven by a gravel pit and a brick kiln. Many of the early houses were built from the locally made bricks, which is rather unusual for this construction period.
In the area around Newtown there are a number of prehistoric archaeological monuments, two of which were in the National Register of Historic Places added: the "Odd Fellows Cemetery Mound" is a grave mound from the Adena culture , which was first described in the 1881st The "Hahn Field Archeological District" contains finds from the Fort Ancient and Late Woodland cultures .
