Ngapoi Ngawang Jigmê (born February 1, 1910 in Lhasa , Tibet , † December 23, 2009 in Beijing ) was a Tibetan politician in the People's Republic of China and a member of the Tibetan civil administration.

Life

Ngapoi Ngawang Jigmê, who comes from a Tibetan aristocratic family, was sent to Qamdo by the newly enthroned 14th Dalai Lama as governor and commander-in-chief of the Tibetan armed forces in eastern Tibet on the eve of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (VBA) invasion of West Kham , west of what was then Xikang . When the city of Qamdo was surrounded by the Chinese troops immediately afterwards , he avoided bloodshed by the early surrender .

As a senior official of the Tibetan delegation sent to Beijing to negotiate, which halted the temporary advance of the PLA, he and the members of his delegation signed the so-called 17-point agreement between the Lhasa government and the state leadership in Beijing. Since this agreement meant the Lhasa government gave up its claim to sovereignty in exchange for guarantees of autonomy and religious freedom, Jigmê is sometimes portrayed as a "traitor" in Tibetan exile.

Ngapo, 1955

His career continued in the political leadership of the Tibet Autonomous Region and at the national level. In 1955 he was appointed lieutenant general of the VBA . Among other functions, he held the post of Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of the PRC for many years .

Jigmê was appointed President of the Association for the Protection and Development of Tibetan Culture on June 21, 2004. He died in 2009 at the age of 99.
