Nicholas White (medic)

Sir Nicholas John White (born March 13, 1951 ) is a British tropical medicine specialist . He has made an outstanding contribution to combating tropical diseases in developing countries , particularly malaria, using artemisinin- based combination therapies .

White studied at Guy's Hospital Medical School of King's College London Medical. He completed his specialist training in internal medicine at various hospitals in London and at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford . Since 1980 he has been a member of the teaching staff at Mahidol University in Thailand and the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford as part of a scientific cooperation (Mahidol Oxford Research Unit) . He has been the director of this department since 1986 and has similar collaborations with Vietnam(1991) and Laos (1999) opened. Research into tropical diseases such as malaria , melioidosis , typhoid , tetanus , dengue fever , rickettsioses and bird flu is carried out at these facilities .

White became Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1999 . He was awarded the 2005 GlaxoSmithKline Prize of the Royal Society , which elected him a member in 2006. In 2010 White received both the Canada Gairdner Global Health Award and the Prince Mahidol Prize . In 2017 he was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG).

White is the author of more than 1,000 scientific publications . Its h-index is 168 (as of December 2018). He is married and has three children.
