Lord Nicholas Charles Edward Jonathan Windsor (born July 25, 1970 in London ) is a member of the British royal family and a second nephew of Queen Elizabeth II .

He is the youngest child of Prince Edward, 2nd Duke of Kent , and Katharine, Duchess of Kent , and a great-grandson of King George V . As the younger son of a duke , he uses the courtesy address "Lord" Nicholas Windsor.

Early years

Lord Nicholas Windsor was born on July 25, 1970 at King's College Hospital , Denmark Hill, London . He has an older brother, George Windsor, Earl of St. Andrews, and a sister, Lady Helen Taylor. He was baptized on September 11, 1970 at Windsor Castle . His godparents included Charles, Prince of Wales and Donald Coggan , then Archbishop of York and later Archbishop of Canterbury .

Windsor was educated at Westminster Under School and then Harrow School . He later attended Harris Manchester College, Oxford , where he studied theology .

In a private ceremony in 2001, he was accepted into the Catholic Church and therefore forfeited his right to inherit the British throne . His mother had already converted in 1994. Catholics are excluded from the throne by the Act of Settlement 1701 .

On July 14, 2011, he became Honorary Vice President of the Staff Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham , an Anglican order within the Catholic Church.

Windsor described abortion as a threat to society that was "worse than al-Qaeda ".

Marriage and family

Windsor met his future wife, Paola Doimi de Lupis Frankopan Šubić Zrinski, at a millennium party in New York City in 1999 . He got engaged to her in July 2006. They married on November 4, 2006 in the Santo Stefano degli Abissini in the Vatican after a civil ceremony on October 19, 2006 in a London registry office and thus became Lady Nicholas Windsor. He was the first member of the English royal family to marry there since the Reformation. Under the Royal Marriages Act of 1772 , the Queen of the United Kingdom consented to the marriage. The House of Commons welcomed "the first marriage within the rites of the Catholic Church of a member of the Royal Family since the reign of Queen Mary I and the first marriage of a member of the Royal Family within the Vatican ".

Lord and Lady Nicholas Windsor had their first child, a son, Albert Louis Philip Edward Windsor, on September 22, 2007 at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London. Albert is the eighth grandchild of the Dukes and the Duchess of Kent. The child is the first Windsor since King George VI. bears the name Albert. The House of Commons welcomed the baptism of Albert as the first royal child to be baptized Catholic since 1688. Albert was baptized in a Catholic ceremony in the Queen's Chapel next to St James's Palace in London.

Lady Nicholas gave birth to the couple's second child, Leopold Ernest Augustus Guelph Windsor, on September 8, 2009 at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Leopold was baptized on May 29, 2010 by Angelo Cardinal Comastri in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. A third son, Louis Arthur Nicholas Felix Windsor, was born on May 27, 2014.

Lord Nicholas and his sons are still in the line of succession to the Duke of Kent title , whose succession is not affected by the Act of Settlement 1701. He and his sons are third, fourth, fifth, and sixth in the line of succession to the title.

Charity

In 2011 Windsor was inducted into the Pontifical Academy for Life . He is a signatory to the San José Articles, which promote the protection of the unborn child.

In 2007 Windsor accepted the invitation to become the Patron of Bromley Mind. The position is a public declaration of his support for their work and he makes a practical contribution from time to time by sponsoring special events and fundraisers.

Windsor has worked for Refugee Council in London, the DePaul Trust for the homeless and a school for autistic children. He was a Visiting Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington DC. He is a trustee of the Catholic National Library UK and the Right to Life Charitable Trust, an educational institution whose aim is the complete protection of the unborn child. Windsor is the royal patron, along with his wife Paola of the Christian Heritage Center at Stonyhurst.

He wrote for First Things magazine on abortion, an article that was included in the United States Congressional Report by Congressman Chris Smith . He has written on the subject of abortion in the Telegraph and the Catholic Herald .
