Nick Boddie Williams
Nick Van Boddie Williams (born August 23, 1906 in Onancock , Virginia ; died July 1, 1992 in South Laguna, Laguna Beach , California ) was an American journalist and writer of a science fiction novel.
Life
He was the son of lawyer John F. Williams and teacher Anne Williams, née McKown. He studied ancient Greek at the University of the South in Sewanee , Tennessee , and then political science at the University of Texas , where he graduated in 1929 with a bachelor's degree. From 1927 to 1929 he worked for the Fort Worth Star Telegram , then until 1931 for the Nashville Tennessean . In 1931 he began working as an editor for the Los Angeles Times . In 1958 he became editor-in-chief there. In 1972 he retired. The positive development in the newspaper's reputation is partly attributed to him. In 1971 he was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award of the Association University of Southern California Journalism Award. In 1981 he received the Fourth Estate Award from the National Press Club .
In addition to his journalistic work, he published stories in various magazines, as well as the science fiction novel Atom Curtain (1956), which was also translated into German as The Atomic Curtain . Here, 170 years after an atomic barrier isolated it from the rest of the world, the USA sank back to a Stone Age cultural level. The protagonist penetrates the barrier and finds the love of a cave woman there.
In 1931 he married Elizabeth Rickenbaker, with whom he had three daughters and one son. His son Nick Van Boddie Williams Jr. also became a journalist and editor for The Times Sunday Magazine . After the death of his wife in 1973, he married Barbara Steele that same year. In 1992 Williams died of complications from a lung disease at the age of 85.
