Nicholas Charles Nickeas , also Nick Charles (born June 30, 1946 in Chicago , Illinois , † June 25, 2011 in Santa Fe , New Mexico ) was an American journalist and sports presenter whose great passion was boxing .

Life

Nick Charles' mother was from Sicily and his father from Greece . Charles began his career at local television stations such as WICS in Springfield , where Fred Hickman , his future co-anchor at CNN , began his career. He later served as Sports Director at WTOP Radio and WRC-TV in Washington, DC . He won an AP award for investigative journalism at WJZ-TV in Baltimore , Maryland .

Charles was one of the first people on the air on CNN in 1980 and became the first sports choir there. There he received three CableACE Awards for the best sports program. At CNN he worked until 2001, a. a. on CNN Sports Tonight with Fred Hickman and later on his own program Page One with Nick Charles . He was at the Goodwill Games for Turner Broadcasting in Moscow in 1986 , in Seattle in 1990 , in Saint Petersburg in 1994 and for the boxing matches of the Goodwill Games in New York City in 1998.

In 2001 he was on Showtime in ShoBox: The New Generation . As a boxing commentator, he interviewed numerous boxing greats, including Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson . He was also seen on the sports channel Versus TV. Charles won the Boxing Writer's Association 2007 Broadcaster award . In 2008 he won the Sam Taub Award

In 2009 he was diagnosed with metastatic bladder cancer. In the meantime, he came back to the screen in early 2010 before his health worsened again. He was last seen on HBO's Boxing After Dark in March 2011. He recorded numerous video messages during his illness for his family for the time after his death and was seen again on CNN's Sanjay Gupta MD a few days before his death on June 19, 2011. Charles died on June 25, 2011.

Charles was voted the US 'sexiest sportscaster by the US Television Fan Association for many years in a row.
