Nicholas Anthony "Nick" Montgomery (born October 28, 1981 in Leeds ) is a Scottish football player who is currently under contract with the Australian first division club Central Coast Mariners .

Sheffield United

As a child, Montgomery was an ardent fan of his home club Leeds United , but made his first steps in professional football in the youth division of Sheffield United . He made his debut for Sheffield on October 21, 2000, in the game against Norwich City at Carrow Road . He then established himself more and more as a mainstay in midfield of the Blades , but had to wait for his first goal until November 2001 before he met in the 4-0 home win over Birmingham City . In the 2005/06 season he led Sheffield back to the Premier League with excellent performances and was second behind Phil Jagielka in the Club Player of the Year election. Also in the 2009/10 season he was able to win the Player of the Season award in an injury-ridden Sheffield United squad . After he lost a lot in the 2011/12 season, he lost his regular place and was mostly only used as a substitute, so he moved to Millwall on loan . For Millwall, he completed only two games.

Central Coast Mariners

After twelve years at Sheffield United, he dissolved his contract on August 31, 2012 by mutual agreement with the club's management. Shortly thereafter he announced his move to the Australian club Central Coast Mariners . Montgomery was an important part of the Mariners team that reached the Grand Final in 2013 . His club won the final against the Western Sydney Wanderers 2-0, but Montgomery missed the game due to a suspension. For the 2013/14 season, Montgomery was elected vice-captain. He wore the armband for the first time in the 1-0 win over Sydney FC on January 18, 2014.

National team

Although Montgomery was born in England, he is eligible to play for Scotland. He made his debut for Scotland's U-21s in April 2003 in a 1-0 win over Austria . In 2005 he completed a game for Scotland Futures , which can be viewed roughly as a B-team for the Scottish national team .
