Lohia Machinery Limited , LML Limited for short , is an Indian motorcycle manufacturer with headquarters in Kanpur . LML became known through the licensed LML Star motor scooters , which look similar to the Vespa PX .

history

The company was founded in 1972 as a private corporation under the name Lohia Machines Private Limited and originally manufactured machines for industrial synthetic fiber production . In addition, over the years there was the production of synthetic yarn and leather processing .

Scooter production

From 1959 to 1974 Bajaj Auto was a license producer for the Italian scooter manufacturer Piaggio & CspA .

In 1982 the technical cooperation between Piaggio & CspA and LML was decided. From 1983 to 1985 produced under license LML Vespa PX 100 E (VIX1T) / LML Vespa XE 100 100-m ³ engines and PX-steel sheet metal chassis., The production of gravity thereby shifted. In 1985 the LML Vespa PX 150 E came out and in 1986 the LML Vespa 150 DZ. Also in 1986 came the LML Vespa 150 NV / NV Trident, the LML Vespa 150 Alfa and the LML Vespa 150 T5, which were produced until 1994.

LML Star 4T 125

In 1987 the company was given the current name LML Limited , in 1990 it separated from all other production branches and concentrated entirely on the manufacture of scooters. In 1992 the LML Vespa NV SPL came out, in 1993 the LML Vespa 150 Smart and the LML Vespa Select , also the LML T5 SPL produced in 1995. 1995 began the further development of the LML NV to the LML Star and the LML Supremo was launched. In 1996 the LML Select II and the LML Sensation appeared with a Vespa PK smallframe chassis.

In 1997 there were corporate collaborations with Asian Paints and others with Piaggio. For example, LML committed itself to the production of two-wheel engines for Piaggio by means of a buyback agreement . In the same year, the LML Star came onto the market in the NV series. In 1998 LML was the second largest Indian scooter manufacturer with a market share of 28 percent and an annual production of 325,000 scooters, and in 1999 it was the leading Indian motorcycle manufacturer. In 1998 the LML Trendy small scooter appeared .

After more and more four-stroke engines conquered the Indian scooter market at the end of the 1990s , the collaboration with the South Korean motorcycle manufacturer Daelim began in 1998 . In the same year, the self-developed LML Trendy 60 cm³ scooter appeared without Piaggio's participation . In 1999 the LML Star Deluxe and LML Star Xpress models appeared in the NV series. In December 1999 Piaggio sold its shares in the company and LML retained the rights to the scooter technologies that had been transferred to date.

In 2000 around 60,000 motorcycles were produced. In 2001, the LML Pulse and the LML Prithvi, also based on the Vespa PK smallframe chassis, appeared . When the plant closed in February 2006 after a long strike, production was stopped for the time being. After reopening in March 2008, the company initially concentrated on the production of the successful LML Star models from the NV series, especially for export. In 2009 the LML Star 4 and the LML 150 NV 4-Stroke with a four -stroke engine appeared . Because of the visual proximity of the LML Star models to the Vespa PX model, the Star models with the Euro 3 standard , especially the models with four-stroke engines, have also been in use in Europe and the United States (LML agency there) since the early days A larger market in the 2010s, as the Italian manufacturer Piaggio has so far only offered its own PX model with a two-stroke engine . In 2013 the 125 m³ variant of the LML Star with Variomatic transmission appeared , and at the beginning of 2014 there was also a 150 cm³ variant.

A 150 cm 3 four-stroke version of the LML Select was released for the Indian market in 2011 .

Motorcycle production

After the end of the cooperation with the Italian scooter manufacturer Piaggio at the end of 1999, LML increasingly lost market share. In 2000, the LML Adreno and LML Energy light motorcycles were developed in-house , both initially with 100 cc engines with an output of 8.5 hp, and from the 2001 facelift with 110 cc engines with an output of 9 hp.

The LML Freedom followed in July 2002, and the original version was already a bestseller. By November 2003, an average of 14,000 vehicles were sold per month. Several model variants followed. The light motorcycles and the 150 cm³ motorcycles LML Graptor and LML Beamer , which appeared in 2004, were primarily intended to recapture their own share in the domestic market. The LML CRD 100 was released in October 2005 . After the reopening of the plant, which was closed in 2006, initially no more light motorcycles were produced.

The Freedom was only reissued in 2013 and is still sold today.
