Nicolaus Joachim Guilliam Evers (born April 3, 1766 in Hamburg ; † March 21, 1837 there ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman and author.

Life

Nicolaus Joachim Guilliam Evers was one of ten children of Daniel Konrad Heinrich Evers (1721–1784), preacher at the Michaeliskirche , and his wife Anna Margarethe, geb. Koepke. He attended the learned school of the Johanneum and from 1782 the Hamburg Academic Gymnasium and then studied Protestant theology and philosophy at the University of Jena and from 1788 as a Jungius scholarship holder at the University of Göttingen . On April 30, 1790, after passing his exams, he was accepted as a candidate for the Hamburg Ministry of Spiritual Affairs . In the same year he received his first pastor's position as an afternoon preacher at the church on the Hamburger Berg , now St. Pauli.

On December 8th, 1793 he was appointed deacon (3rd pastor) at the main church Sankt Jacobi , later he became archdeacon (2nd pastor) here.

Evers was considered a "popular pulpit speaker" and representative of rationalism. In the Homiletic Ideas Magazine published by Bernhard Klefeker from 1808 to 1819, he was responsible for treating the epistle - pericopes for the whole year. He was particularly interested in the hymn book and the preservation or revival of the parish singing, which was neglected in the Enlightenment period . To this end, he first published his hymnbook for school lessons and domestic use for young people, especially in Hamburg , in 1811 , which was published three editions, in 1812 a guide to the knowledge and celebration of the festive days in the church year and in 1817/18 his collection of sacred songs to amuse and calm among the Evils and sufferings of life . In the preface to the hymn book for school lessons , he had already made it clear that his long-term goal was the revision of the Hamburg hymn book of 1787, which in his opinion was very deficient. One of the highlights of his life's work from 1832 until his death was his collaboration on the new Hamburg hymnbook, which, however, did not appear until 1843.

Since January 29, 1795 he was married to Maria Amalia, b. Liebrecht, a daughter of the preacher to St. Michaelis Johann Matthias Liebrecht. The couple had nine children, of whom one son and five daughters survived. The son Wilhelm Evers also became pastor and second deacon at the main church Sankt Katharinen , but died in 1852.
