Johann Bernhard Klefeker (born January 12, 1760 in Hamburg , † June 10, 1825 in Leipzig ) was a German Lutheran clergyman, chief pastor at St. Jacobi in Hamburg and theological writer.

Life

Klefeker came from a wealthy Hamburg merchant family; his father was a finance clerk. He first attended the Johanneum and the academic high school in Hamburg. From 1779–82 he studied philosophy and evangelical theology at the University of Leipzig . In 1782 he was the Theological Examination in Hamburg and was Candidatus ministerii . In 1785 he found a job as a catechist at the Spinnhaus in Hamburg. In 1791 he went to the Katharinenkirche in Osnabrück as a preacher . In 1795 he returned to Hamburg and was initially a deacon (2nd pastor) and in 1802 chief pastor at St. Jakobi; as a scholarch , he also directed the Hamburg school system.

In 1817 he received an honorary theological doctorate from the University of Jena on the occasion of the anniversary of the Reformation .

He died on the way to a cure in Karlsbad in Leipzig and was also buried here.

Klefeker was highly regarded in Hamburg as a preacher and pastor for his humanity, liberalism and official gravity . He is considered a theologian of reason , a representative of Enlightenment theology and rationalism . He wrote almost all of his writings in the field of practical theology , popular interpretation of scriptures, and especially homiletics .
