Nicolaus de Tudeschis or Panormitanus (* 1386 in Catania , Sicily , † February 24, 1445 in Palermo ) was an Italian theologian and Archbishop of Palermo .

Life

De Tudeschis became a Benedictine monk and later studied and taught canon law in Bologna . In 1425 he became abbot of the monastery of Santa Maria di Maniace in Val Demone near Catania , and in 1435 archbishop of Palermo ; In 1440 he was elevated to cardinal by the antipope Felix V. De Tudeschis was the author of several commentaries on canon law, but he is also known for his role at the Council of Basel , where he promoted conciliarismdefended against the emphasis on papal supremacy and the antipope Felix V. He died of the plague in Palermo . De Tudeschis is depicted in Basel in the so-called Münstersaal above the cloister of the Basel Minster in wall paintings from the middle of the 15th century.
