The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is a 6,194 km² national forest in Wisconsin . It consists of the Chequamegon National Forest (3,504 km²) and the Nicolet National Forest (2,690 km²), both of which were established in 1933 and merged in 1998. Like all national forests, it is federally owned and is used intensively for forestry purposes.

There are various leisure and recreational offers within the area. In addition to several campsites, the forest offers many opportunities for fishing and hunting. In winter the area can be used for various winter sports activities.

Flora and fauna

Due to the different landscape forms, such as forests, rain bogs , meadows, lakes and rivers in the area, it is home to a multitude of plant and animal species. The primary forest was largely cut down by the beginning of the 19th century. Much of it was only reforested in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps .

Common deciduous tree species are maple species, such as sugar maple , red maple or Vermont maple , oak species such as American white oak and sycamore oak . Large-toothed poplar , beech , American linden, and paper birch are also not uncommon.

The conifers mainly consist of Banks pine , white spruce and balsam fir , but the Canadian hemlock and the occidental tree of life also occur. The ground cover consists of blueberries , raspberries , blackberries , cranberries , rock pears , ferns , deciduous mosses and mushrooms . Are on the rivers and lakes Cattail widespread. There is also a large number of wildflowers.

The American black bear , the white-tailed deer , the North American otter and chipmunk live in the national forest . Wapiti and Wolf were resettled. Common bird species are turkey , grouse , red cardinals , helmeted woodpeckers and bald eagles . The lakes and rivers are rich in fish. Here are among other muskellunge , walleye and pike before.

The Moquah Barrens Research Natural Area is a National Natural Landmark in the National Forest.
