The Niddatalsperre (Niddastausee) dams the river Nidda and the second inlet Läunsbach on the western edge of the Vogelsberg . The reservoir has an area of ​​around 65 hectares . It is located in the Vogelsbergkreis near and in the area of Schotten in Hesse .

The Niddatalsperre - built from 1968 to 1970 - belongs to the NIDDA water association based in Friedberg and is primarily used for flood protection and low water recharge in the Nidda during times of low flow. The dam is also used to generate electricity from hydropower, as well as for local recreation and tourism.

The barrier structure of the dam is a rock embankment with an asphalt concrete outer seal. The external seal made of asphalt concrete covers an area of ​​approx. 18,000 m². The rock fill material consists mainly of basalt, which can be found in the area of ​​the Vogelsberg. The material required for the support body was obtained in the stowage area. Since a concrete renovation and an associated increase in the flood relief system in 2002, the storage target has been 234.30 m. ü. NN. This increased the storage volume by approx. 180,000 m³ to 6.81 million m³.

Between June and September 2018, the asphalt outer seal of the Niddatalsperre between the dam crest (237.00 m above sea level) and the altitude of 222.00 m above sea level was renewed. Here, 6 cm of the asphalt sealing layer was milled off, a 10 cm thick asphalt drainage binder layer and a 7 cm thick new sealing layer were installed. The new asphalt sealing layer and the old sealing layer are protected up to a height of 215.22 m above sea level. NN through an approx. 2 mm thick mastic asphalt.

Pre-locking

There is a pre- dam at each of the two tributaries, Nidda and Läunsbach . A complete emptying of the dam in 2001 showed that the two pre-dams function perfectly. Within 30 years of operation, sediments with only a small thickness have deposited in the reservoir .

Hydroelectric power plant

The Niddatalsperre has had a hydropower plant since it was commissioned . Since then, electricity has been generated with a system Ossberger through-flow turbine with a maximum output of 90 kW and an annual working capacity of maximum 0.60 GWh. The electricity generated supplies the operating and measuring equipment or is fed into the existing supply network of the local energy supply company. Since the beginning of 2008, another small turbine has been generating electricity with a maximum output of 22 kW. It is an inverted volute casing centrifugal pump with which the minimum water output of the dam of 100 l / s is used economically.

Sailboats on the lake

The reservoir is a popular recreational facility for anglers , sailors , surfers and campers . The five-kilometer-long service route, which is partially open to public use, is used by cyclists , inline skaters and pedestrians . The lake is open for swimming in two marked areas. The scuba diving in the lake with compressed air diving equipment is not permitted recreational athletes.
